Relay Carrier Signal Extension — New 900MHz Band

The Relay Carrier platform has received a firmware and hardware update enabling operation in the 900MHz frequency band, extending effective operational range by up to 40% compared to the previous 2.4GHz primary configuration.

Why 900MHz

The 900MHz band offers significantly better propagation through foliage, urban structures, and terrain features. In field tests, the updated Relay Carrier maintained a stable bidirectional link at 14.2 km over mixed terrain — compared to 10.1 km on 2.4GHz under identical conditions.

“The 900MHz band was the most requested feature from forward operators. Penetration through tree lines and building facades changes the tactical calculus considerably.”

Technical Specifications

The new transceiver module operates at 25mW output power on 900MHz, compliant with current field usage regulations. It supports the same FHSS protocol used across all Blackwasp platforms, ensuring interoperability with existing ground station hardware including VELES.

Firmware 3.1 ships with automatic band-switching logic: the carrier defaults to 2.4GHz for short-range operations (under 6 km) and transitions to 900MHz when signal quality drops below the −85 dBm threshold. This transition is seamless and does not interrupt the video stream.

Upgrade Path

Existing Relay Carrier units manufactured after Q3 2025 can receive the 900MHz capability via a hardware module replacement and firmware update. Units manufactured earlier require a full transmitter board replacement. Contact your regional Blackwasp representative for upgrade scheduling.
